Racism and other social injustices are systemic issues that are detrimental to the mental health of people who are oppressed, as well as for those who are privileged. It robs us all of our common humanity and studies show that it contributes to a host of mental health issues.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a powerful technique that can help people defuse from the grips of their internal issues, long-standing, fear-based and life-limiting stories, and to begin to align their behavior with their chosen values. ACT provides a perspective that can (hopefully!) give people a greater sense of meaning and purpose in their lives. This workshop will provide education on current social justice issues--primarily racism---and the current impact on communities of color, primarily African Americans. This powerful workshop hopes to help and appeal to compassionate, culturally-responsive and socially-aware therapists to address issues like racism and other social injustices that may be impacting the lives of their clients. |
